THIS MONTH AT RIVERSTONE KIDS 〰️

EARLY CHILDHOOD

  • One common phrase we hear children repeat is, “Watch this!” They want us to watch their spins and cartwheels, their dance routines, and what their toys can do. It’s fun to pretend to be amazed and say, “Wow,” no matter what it is.

This month, we are teaching our preschoolers to watch the One who can do anything. The One who has shown that the power of the Lord is with Him. Who is this One? Jesus, of course! Yes, this month is all about Jesus and how Jesus can do anything!

  • WEEK 1 (Matthew 8:23-27; Mark 4:35-41; Luke 8:22-25)
Story Focus: Jesus can calm a storm.

While Jesus and His disciples are in a boat, a huge storm comes. The disciples are terrified. Jesus, however, is sleeping quite peacefully. The disciples frantically wake Jesus up. Then they watch Jesus do something they did not expect. Jesus tells the storm to stop . . . and it does! The disciples are amazed and think, “Who is this? Even the wind and waves obey Him!”

    WEEK 2 (John 9:1-11)
Story Focus: Jesus can help people. Jesus sees a man who was born blind.

Jesus kneels down and begins making mud with dirt and His own spit. Then Jesus spreads the mud on the man’s eyes and tells him to go wash in a pool of water. The man who was born blind becomes the man who can see for the first time!

    WEEK 3 (Matthew 4:18; Luke 5:1-7)
Story Focus: Jesus’ power is amazing.

After Jesus stands on Peter and Andrew’s boat to teach a crowd, Jesus tells them to row out so they can go fishing. Peter tells Jesus that they already tried and caught nothing. But since it was Jesus, Peter and Andrew go fishing again, and Jesus does something only He has the power to do. Peter and Andrew catch so many fish the nets almost break!

    WEEK 4 (John 6:1-14)
Story Focus: Jesus can do amazing things.

A crowd follows Jesus because they know He can do amazing things. Jesus wants to feed crowd, but there is over 5,000 people! Philip knows they don’t have the money to feed them, and Andrew offers a boy’s meal of 5 small loaves of bread and 2 small fish. Jesus takes the bread and fish, thanks God for it, and gives over 5,000 people as much bread and fish as they want! There was even food leftover.

    WEEK 5 (Matthew 8:14-15)
Story Focus: Jesus can do anything.

Jesus goes to the house of Peter, one of His disciples. Jesus notices Peter’s mother-in-law is sick in bed with a fever. What does Jesus do? Jesus goes to the woman, takes her hand and the fever goes away! She immediately gets out of bed and prepares Jesus a meal.

    WEEK 2 (Matthew 9:9-10)
Story Focus: Jesus loves everyone. Matthew is a tax collector. That means his job is to collect money from people, but he takes more money than he is should. That makes people very mad! But Jesus loves Matthew and wants to be his friend so He tells Matthew: “Follow Me!” And Matthew follows Jesus! Jesus has dinner at Matthew’s house and a lot of people show up. Some people ask, “Why would Jesus want to be friends with someone who makes bad choices?” Because Jesus loves everyone.

    WEEK 3 (John 1:43-49)
Story Focus: I can tell my friends about Jesus.
Jesus wants to be Philip’s friend, so he goes up to Philip and says, “Follow Me!” Philip is so excited that he looks for his friend Nathanael. Philip tells Nathanael all about Jesus and that he should come and see Him. Nathanael talks with Jesus, and right then, Nathanael knows that Jesus is God’s Son and that Jesus loves everyone. Philip and Nathanael become friends with Jesus because Jesus loves everyone.

    WEEK 4 (Matthew 4:18-22, 9:9-10, 10:2-4; John 1:43-49)
Story Focus: Jesus wants everyone to follow Him.
Jesus chooses twelve disciples to follow Him. They come from different places and have different families and jobs. They are all different, but what is the same is that Jesus loves every one of them. The twelve disciples follow Jesus because Jesus loves everyone.

eLEMENTARY

  • Cooperation isn’t always something that may happen naturally, but it is something that is near and dear to God’s heart. Since the beginning of creation we see how God created us to be in community with one another. Cooperation is a spiritual concept that originates with God, and throughout the Bible, we see how God brought people together to accomplish God’s plan for the world. When we work together, we reflect Jesus to others, and our love for one another can point people to Him as we explore what God wants us to do together.

  • W E E K 1
We start the month in Luke 5:1-11, 27-32; 6:12-16; 8:1-3. Here we see Jesus has started His ministry by gathering His disciples together. This was the most unlikely group of people, all from different backgrounds, but Jesus still called them to bring about His mission.

Bottom Line: Jesus wants us to work together. Sometimes it may feel easier to work alone than with others, especially when you don’t agree or get along. But those moments are exactly when we need to learn how to cooperate with others. Just as Jesus gathered a group of VERY different people to help Him accomplish His mission, we too are created to work together, differences and all.

    W E E K 2
In week 2, we head to Exodus 17:8-13 where Joshua and the Israelites were facing the Amalekites in battle. Anytime Moses held up his staff, the Israelites did well, and when he dropped them, they would start to lose. So Aaron and Hur came up with a plan to help Moses succeed. Moses needed people to literally hold him up in order for Joshua to lead the Israelites to victory.

Bottom Line: Work together to help someone succeed. Just as Aaron and Hur created a plan together to help Moses succeed, kids can learn how working together doesn’t just impact themselves but it impacts those around them as well. Together, you can work with others to help those around you accomplish something no matter how big or small it is.

    W E E K 3

In week 3, we head to Nehemiah 1–4; 6:15, where Nehemiah and the Israelite people face a HUGE problem. They had returned home to Judah where the city walls had crumbled. Nehemiah rallied the people together and led them to work together to rebuild the wall in just 52 days!

Bottom Line: Work together to solve problems. Have you ever been stumped by a problem and no matter how many times you faced it, couldn’t figure out a way to solve it? Sometimes all it takes is another pair of eyes. When you work together with someone else, you can do BIG things, just like the people of Israel did in our story.

    W E E K 4
For week 4 we head to Luke 5:17-26. Here we encounter four friends and their cooperation to help another friend see Jesus. Their friend was paralyzed and could not walk, so they did everything they could to get him to Jesus — even tear down a roof! Because of the four friends’ faith and cooperation, Jesus did something incredible, changing the life of the man who was paralyzed, forever.

Bottom Line: Work together to help someone in need. Some needs may seem intimidating or too big for you to truly make a difference — and they very well could be if you tackle it alone. However, when you cooperate with others and work together, you have a better chance of making a lasting impact on someone else’s life.

    W E E K 5
We end the month in 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 with the early church. Arguments had broken out and sides were taken as the believers struggled to come together. Paul wrote to them, encouraging them to use their differences as they work together to tell others about Jesus because their gifts work best together.

Bottom Line: Work together to point people to Jesus. When we work together, many people will have a chance to see Jesus’ love in action. Accomplishing Jesus’ mission for the world is a HUGE undertaking. However, when we practice working together, we can help others and show them Jesus along the way.

  • This month’s verse is from Ecclesiastes 4:9 (NIrV):

“Two people are better than one. They can help each other in everything they do.”
